When Educators Help Students Lead AI With Intention, They Don’t Cheat, They Grow! Some Thoughts For the 2025/2026 School Year

Current conversations about artificial intelligence (AI) in schools are often framed around  concerns such as, “Will students use it to cheat?” or “Will it undermine authentic learning?” These are absolutely fair concerns, but they don’t capture the full picture. Here at the White Hatter, we do not believe AI is the end of learning, if we integrate AI thoughtfully, it can be the beginning of reimagining what learning looks like.


The debate isn’t just whether AI should be allowed in classrooms. The more important question is how we guide students in using it responsibly. When students are trusted to lead with intention, under clear expectations, guidance, and ethical boundaries, AI becomes a tool for growth rather than a shortcut. (1)


The comparison is sometimes made to calculators in math classrooms. That analogy is useful but incomplete. Calculators didn’t erase the need for learning math, they shifted the focus toward problem solving once the basics were mastered. AI can play a similar role if introduced responsibly. (2) The reality is that  students still need critical thinking, creativity, and subject knowledge before AI adds value.


However, teachers cannot effectively teach what they do not understand. If educators are to help students use AI responsibly, they must first need opportunities to explore the technology themselves. This requires professional development, but also a mindset shift such as not viewing AI as a threat, but as an opportunity to model purposeful use, something that we like to call a “threatened” vs “challenged” mindset.


When teachers demonstrate how AI can brainstorm ideas, test hypotheses, improve communication, or act as a study partner, they show students what intentional use looks like. Just as importantly, they set boundaries around plagiarism, over dependence, and misinformation.


AI, like any powerful tool, needs guardrails. Clear parameters are not about banning creativity but about protecting integrity. Schools should provide guidelines that answer practical questions such as:


• When is AI use encouraged?


• What type of AI is being used?


• Is the AI appropriate for the age and development of the student?


• When is AI off-limits?


• How should students cite or disclose AI support?


• What does ethical use look like in practice?


These guardrails are essential not only to prevent cheating, but also to help students practice digital responsibility. Without them, misuse is more likely and with them, students learn to make ethical decisions.


One valid concern often mentioned is access. Yes, not every school, teacher, or student will have the same exposure to high quality AI education and tools. If ignored, this could widen existing achievement gaps. This is why AI integration must be accompanied by commitments to equity that include funding, training, and access initiatives that ensure all students benefit, not just those in well resourced schools. However, this is likely to present real challenges for schools and districts operating with limited resources and budgets.


Perhaps the strongest reason to teach AI in schools is that it is unrealistic, even unfair, to graduate students without the skills they will need in their daily lives and future careers. AI will be central to fields ranging from healthcare to engineering to the arts. But, preparing students isn’t only about employability, AI literacy is also about creativity, civic participation, and the ability to critically evaluate a technology that increasingly shapes our world.


The reality is that AI is already here, students are using it either covertly or overtly, and its use by students will only grow in the coming school year.  If we do not teach students how to use AI responsibly, not only can it be misused, we also risk leaving them underprepared for both work and online citizenship.


It’s true that AI can be misused, just as any new technology has been in the past. But, that isn’t a reason to ban it from classrooms, it’s a reason to teach it better. When we acknowledge concerns about plagiarism, dependency, or misinformation and actively design solutions such as assignments that require transparency, projects that integrate AI ethically, and policies that support integrity, we strengthen learning rather than weaken it.


Parents, caregivers, and educators, your children and students will inherit a world where AI isn’t optional. Educators, your students are counting on you to help prepare and guide them for that reality. Together, we can shift the narrative from fear of misuse to empowerment through intention.


AI will not kill learning, however, it will require us to reimagine learning. (3) That reimagining must begin now!
