Three Years Later: Understanding AI in Our Kids’ Lives and The New Evolution Of Digital Literacy.

Caveat - In the summer of 2023, we published our first article for parents, caregivers, and educators on artificial intelligence titled, “Parents and Educators: What You Need to Know to Start the Conversation With Your Child or Student Surrounding Their Use of Artificial Intelligence (1).” At the time, AI was only beginning to enter the public conversation, and many families were just starting to ask what it might mean for education, creativity, and everyday life.
Three years later, the landscape has changed dramatically. Artificial intelligence has evolved at an extraordinary pace and is now woven into the apps, devices, social media platforms, search engines, and digital services that young people use every day. Capabilities that once seemed futuristic have quickly become commonplace, while entirely new developments continue to emerge at a remarkable rate.
This article is intended to bring parents, caregivers, and educators up to date on where artificial intelligence stands today, what has changed since those early conversations, and what they need to understand moving forward. Although AI continues to evolve at breakneck speed, our goal is to provide a practical foundation that will help families and educators make informed, thoughtful decisions as they navigate this rapidly changing onlife world.
For more than two decades, digital literacy and internet safety education have focused on preparing young people to participate safely, responsibly, and thoughtfully in an increasingly connected world. Parents, caregivers, educators, and schools have invested considerable time teaching children how to protect their privacy, respond to cyberbullying, recognize scams, identify online predators, evaluate sources, manage their digital reputation, question misinformation, and develop healthier online relationships. These lessons have never simply been about learning how to operate technology. At their core, they have always been about helping young people develop the judgment, character, critical thinking, and ethical awareness needed to make good decisions in environments that continue to evolve.
Those foundational skills remain just as important today as they were when social media first emerged. What has changed is the environment in which young people must now apply them. Artificial intelligence is no longer a separate technology that exists alongside the internet, it has now become embedded within it. AI now influences what young people watch, what they read, what they create, how information is presented to them, which content receives greater visibility, and increasingly, who or what they communicate with.
As a result, it is no longer sufficient to teach digital literacy and AI literacy as though they are two separate educational topics. AI literacy is not replacing digital literacy. Rather, it has become another essential layer running through nearly every aspect of it, something that we call “Onlife Literacy”.
Social Media Is Becoming an AI Ecosystem
For years, conversations about online safety focused primarily on helping children navigate social media platforms. Parents and caregivers learned about privacy settings, cyberbullying, inappropriate content, digital footprints, online exploitation, and the psychological impact of constant connectivity. While these issues remain highly relevant, the platforms themselves are undergoing a significant transformation.
Today’s social media platforms are no longer simply places where young people communicate with friends, share photos, post videos, or follow creators. They are rapidly becoming AI powered ecosystems where conversational assistants, recommendation systems, generative tools, automated summaries, image creators, and predictive technologies are woven directly into the user experience.
Artificial intelligence is no longer something a young person must intentionally seek out by downloading a dedicated application or visiting a separate website. Instead, it’s appearing inside the platforms they already use every day. A youth or teen may be watching short form videos, searching for information, messaging friends, creating content, or browsing a social feed while simultaneously interacting with multiple forms of artificial intelligence, often without recognizing where the technology begins or ends.
For parents and caregivers, this changes the conversation entirely. The question is no longer simply, “Should my child be using AI?” Increasingly, the more relevant question is, “Does my child recognize when artificial intelligence is already shaping their experience?”
Legacy Social Media Has Become Social AI Powered Media
Perhaps the clearest example of this shift can be seen across Meta’s family of platforms. Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Threads increasingly include access to Meta AI or other AI-powered features that allow users to ask questions, generate images, receive recommendations, draft content, search for information, or interact conversationally without leaving the application.
Snapchat has integrated My AI directly into its chat environment, placing an AI chatbot alongside conversations with friends. Young people can ask My AI questions, seek advice, brainstorm ideas, generate images, plan activities, or simply carry on a casual conversation. Because My AI appears in the same general area as human contacts, the interaction can feel less like using a tool and more like messaging another participant within the platform.
X, formerly known as Twitter, has integrated Grok into its platform, allowing users to ask questions about posts, summarize topics, generate images, explain trending discussions, and respond to information circulating in real time. TikTok continues to incorporate AI into search, content recommendations, creative tools, avatars, advertising, editing, and content production. YouTube’s recommendation systems use increasingly sophisticated predictive models to decide which videos users are most likely to watch next. LinkedIn employs AI in profile writing, job searching, messaging, résumé development, networking, and professional content creation.
When these developments are viewed together, a clear pattern emerges. The largest technology companies are no longer simply operating social media platforms. They are transforming those platforms into AI powered environments where artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly constant presence throughout the user experience.
The Evolution of Digital Literacy
Digital literacy has never been a fixed or static subject. It has continually evolved alongside the technologies shaping our lives.
When the internet first entered homes and classrooms, digital literacy focused largely on teaching people how to access information, use computers, communicate through email, and navigate websites safely. As technology developed, the curriculum expanded. The arrival of social media shifted attention toward privacy, online reputation, cyberbullying, misinformation, scams, digital citizenship, persuasive design, and the effects of being constantly connected. Artificial intelligence represents the next stage of that evolution.
Unlike many previous technologies, AI is not simply another application that students choose to install, it’s becoming an invisible operating layer beneath much of the digital ecosystem. Recommendation systems decide which videos appear first in a teenager’s feed. AI generated summaries appear before students visit original sources. Messaging platforms suggest replies, translate conversations, generate images, and increasingly act as conversational partners. Educational applications personalize instruction using AI, while gaming platforms use intelligent systems to shape gameplay, advertising, moderation, and social interaction. The technology is no longer sitting beside social media, it’s becoming woven into the fabric of it.
Recognizing this convergence changes how families and schools should think about online safety, security, privacy, and literacy education. Rather than creating isolated lessons about artificial intelligence, AI literacy should be integrated into the conversations we already have about privacy, misinformation, cyberbullying, online relationships, advertising, scams, reputation, consent, digital well-being, and critical thinking. Each of these topics now includes an AI dimension that did not exist in the same way only a few years ago.
AI Is No Longer Just a Tool. It Is Becoming Part of the Conversation.
Historically, using the internet to find information often meant opening a search engine, typing a question, reviewing several links, comparing sources, and deciding which information appeared credible. Although people did not always follow that process carefully, it still created at least some separation between the person asking the question and the sources providing the answers.
Conversational artificial intelligence changes that experience. Instead of offering a list of websites, AI provides a polished response in complete sentences. It may speak with confidence, adapt to the user’s language, remember the context of the conversation, ask follow up questions, provide reassurance, and communicate in a way that feels remarkably human. Because of this, many users begin interacting with AI less like a search engine and more like another person participating in a conversation.
This shift matters because human beings naturally anthropomorphize technology. We give names to vehicles, complain to computers, thank voice assistants, and describe devices as though they possess feelings or intentions. Conversational AI strengthens this tendency because it has been intentionally designed to communicate through language patterns, humour, encouragement, empathy, and social cues that people associate with human relationships.
For youth and teens whose social and emotional development is still evolving, the distinction between genuine human empathy and simulated empathy becomes critically important.
Artificial intelligence can generate language that sounds caring, but it does not care. It can appear understanding, but it does not possess lived experience. It can provide reassurance, but it does not have wisdom, emotional awareness, moral responsibility, or a personal investment in a child’s well-being. That does not make the technology inherently harmful. However, it does mean young people need help understanding what it is and what it is not.
Personalization Is Becoming More Powerful
Another important development is the growing personalization of artificial intelligence. Technology companies are investing heavily in systems designed to learn from user’s interests, preferences, searches, communication styles, behaviours, and previous interactions. Over time, these systems may become increasingly effective at predicting what a person wants to see, hear, purchase, watch, or discuss.
From a convenience perspective, this personalization can be helpful. An AI assistant may offer more relevant suggestions, remember previous topics, recommend useful content, or provide answers that better reflect the user’s circumstances.
However, personalization also raises important questions. As an AI system becomes more familiar with an individual user, the interaction may begin to feel increasingly personal, responsive, and emotionally meaningful. Some young people may start turning to AI not only for information, but also for reassurance, validation, companionship, relationship advice, or emotional support.
This does not necessarily mean they will stop communicating with parents, teachers, counsellors, or friends. However, it does mean that AI may become another influential voice shaping how they think about identity, relationships, health, emotions, values, and decision-making which poses all kinds of concerns.
Parents and caregivers should not ignore that possibility, nor should they respond with panic. The more constructive response is to remain involved, curious, and available so that children continue to see trusted adults as their primary source of guidance when decisions involve emotional, ethical, relational, or personal complexity.
Reading Media Now Requires Understanding Artificial Intelligence
For decades, media literacy has encouraged students to think critically about the information they encounter. Young people have been taught to ask who created a message, why it was produced, whose interests it serves, what persuasive techniques are being used, what evidence supports it, and what perspectives may have been excluded. Those questions remain essential because every piece of media still reflects choices made by people, organizations, or institutions.
Artificial intelligence, however, has introduced another layer of complexity. Today’s media environment is no longer shaped solely by direct human decisions. AI now writes headlines, generates photographs, edits videos, synthesizes voices, recommends articles, summarizes research, translates languages, creates advertisements, and personalizes information differently for individual users. In many cases, the content children encounter has been influenced by artificial intelligence long before they ever see it.
Being media literate in 2026 therefore requires more than asking who created a message. It also requires asking how artificial intelligence may have influenced its creation, selection, distribution, ranking, or presentation. Was an image edited, enhanced, or entirely generated? Was an article summarized by AI before the user encountered the original source? Did an algorithm recommend the content because it was accurate and valuable, or because it predicted that the user would remain engaged? Was important context removed during an automated summary? Did an AI system amplify a particular message because it generated strong emotional reactions?
These questions should not encourage youth and teens to distrust everything. They should encourage thoughtful curiosity and help young people understand that technology increasingly participates in shaping what they see, what they believe, and what they come to understand about the world.
The Goal Is Not Distrust. The Goal Is Judgment.
Whenever a powerful new technology emerges, there is a temptation to describe it as either entirely beneficial or inherently dangerous, and artificial intelligence is no exception. Some people encourage young people to use AI for almost everything, while others argue that children should avoid it whenever possible. However, both positions overlook the more important issue. AI literacy should not teach children to accept artificial intelligence without question, and it should not encourage them to fear or avoid it. Its purpose should be to help young people develop the judgment needed to decide when AI is useful, when its answers require verification, and when human wisdom should take priority.
Youth and teens need to understand where AI performs well, where it commonly fails, how bias may appear, why hallucinations happen, how confident language can disguise uncertainty, and when human expertise remains indispensable. They should have opportunities to compare AI generated answers with trusted sources, identify missing context, recognize when evidence is weak, and understand that a polished response is not automatically an accurate one.
This is why AI literacy extends far beyond learning how to write effective prompts. Prompting may improve efficiency, but judgment determines whether the result is accurate, ethical, useful, and appropriate. Technology will continue changing throughout a child’s lifetime. The ability to evaluate that technology critically will remain valuable regardless of which apps, platforms, or AI models replace the ones currently in use.
From Passive Consumers to Active Thinkers
One of the defining features of modern technology is its ability to perform cognitive work on behalf of users. Recommendation systems decide what to watch next. AI tools summarize lengthy reports into short paragraphs. Search engines increasingly provide direct answers before users examine original sources. Writing assistants generate essays, messages, captions, and complete paragraphs. Image generators create sophisticated visuals without requiring traditional artistic skills.
These technologies offer real benefits, particularly in accessibility, creativity, education, communication, and productivity. However, they also introduce a subtle risk. When technology consistently performs the difficult thinking for us, it can become easier to accept information without examining how it was produced, what evidence supports it, or whether it deserves our confidence. Convenience can gradually reduce curiosity when young people are not encouraged to remain active participants in their own learning.
Digital literacy in the AI era must therefore focus on much more than learning how to operate tools. It should help students become thoughtful contributors who ask questions, compare perspectives, seek original evidence, recognize uncertainty, examine sources, and understand that knowledge develops through inquiry rather than passive acceptance. Artificial intelligence can be a valuable thinking partner, however, it should not become a thinking replacement.
AI Is Becoming More Agentic
The next generation of artificial intelligence will not simply answer questions or generate content. Increasingly, AI systems are being designed to act on behalf of users. This development is often described as agentic AI.
These systems may be able to organize schedules, compare products, conduct research, plan travel, plan a date with a new person, coordinate calendars, make reservations, complete purchases, draft communications, summarize documents, and perform a growing number of everyday tasks with limited direct supervision.
These capabilities will provide tremendous convenience, but they also raise new questions about judgment, accountability, privacy, dependency, and decision-making. If an AI system recommends a purchase, chooses a source, books a service, filters information, chooses a dating partner, or prioritizes one option over another, young people should understand that the recommendation is still shaped by data, programming, platform incentives, and potential limitations. As AI becomes more capable of acting on our behalf, human oversight becomes even more important, not less.
Parents, caregivers, and educators will need to help young people understand when delegation is appropriate and when direct human involvement remains essential. Efficiency should not come at the expense of awareness, responsibility, or informed consent.
Ethics Will Matter More Than Ever
Perhaps the most important contribution AI literacy can make is helping young people understand that technological decisions are also ethical decisions.
Previous generations rarely had to ask whether an essay should disclose AI assistance, whether an image represented reality or synthesis, or whether an automated system should influence a friendship, school assignment, hiring decision, or personal relationship. Today’s youth and teens are increasingly facing these questions in everyday life.
Should AI complete an assignment when the purpose of that assignment is learning? Should a student disclose when artificial intelligence has assisted with writing, research, or image creation? What responsibilities do people have when sharing AI generated images or videos that others may mistake for reality? How should copyright apply to AI produced work? Who is accountable when false AI-generated information causes harm? How should privacy be protected when people disclose personal information to conversational systems?
These questions cannot be answered by software updates or corporate policies alone. They require integrity, empathy, honesty, accountability, respect, fairness, and ethical reasoning. For this reason, AI literacy should never be treated solely as a technical competency. This is why we argue that as artificial intelligence becomes more capable, the “human element” become more important (2).
Privacy Now Includes What Children Tell AI
Privacy education has traditionally focused on what young people post publicly, who can see their profiles, what information they share with strangers, and how digital footprints may affect them later in life. Those lessons remain important, but conversational AI adds another consideration.
Young people may disclose highly personal information to AI because it appears patient, available, non-judgmental, and private. They may discuss family conflict, friendships, mental health, romantic relationships, insecurities, health concerns, school struggles, or personal experiences they would hesitate to share publicly.
Children need to understand that an AI chatbot is not the same as a private diary, trusted adult, counsellor, or confidential professional. Information entered into a digital platform may be stored, processed, reviewed, or used according to the company’s policies and technical systems.
A useful family guideline is to encourage children not to share with AI anything they would not feel comfortable sharing with an unfamiliar person or having stored by a technology company. The goal is not to frighten them, it’s to build thoughtful habits around digital disclosure.
Parents and Caregivers Remain the Most Important Teachers
Many parents and caregivers tell us they feel overwhelmed because artificial intelligence appears to be developing faster than they can keep up. They worry that they do not understand the technology well enough to guide their children. Those concerns are understandable, but parents and caregivers often underestimate the role they are already equipped to play.
Youth and teens do not need adults who understand every AI model, software update, algorithm, or new application. They need parents, caregivers, and educators who demonstrate curiosity, ask thoughtful questions, model responsible technology use, encourage verification, and remain emotionally available when technology intersects with important life decisions.
Families can build AI literacy through everyday conversations. Parents and caregivers can ask how information was created, whether AI may have influenced it, what evidence supports it, how it could be verified, what perspectives may be missing, and whether the child believes the AI’s answer is complete or reliable.
Parents and caregivers can also experiment with AI alongside their children. They can ask the same question in different ways, compare the responses, identify inaccuracies, examine sources, and discuss why one answer may be more trustworthy than another. These activities teach children that AI outputs should be examined rather than automatically accepted.
Perhaps most importantly, parents and caregivers can reinforce the message that artificial intelligence should never become the final authority on issues involving personal safety, health, relationships, identity, ethics, or emotional well-being. AI may assist thinking, but trusted humans must remain central to the decisions that matter most.
Preparing Children for Their Onlife World
We have often said that young people no longer move between a separate online world and offline world. Those environments have merged into what we describe as the onlife world, where digital experiences shape everyday life and everyday experiences influence what occurs online.
Artificial intelligence is now becoming part of that onlife reality. It is influencing education, entertainment, communication, commerce, relationships, creativity, identity, and decision making in ways that are becoming increasingly difficult for the average user to see.
This is precisely why digital literacy, media literacy, internet safety, persuasion literacy, human element literacy, and AI literacy can no longer be treated as isolated educational subjects .
Digital literacy remains the foundation that helps young people use technology safely, effectively, and responsibly. Media literacy teaches them how information is created, distributed, and used to influence society. Persuasion literacy helps them recognize how emotion, language, algorithms, and design are used to shape beliefs and behaviour. AI literacy helps them understand the intelligent systems increasingly guiding digital experiences. Human element literacy develops the empathy, judgment, integrity, responsibility, resilience, and relational skills needed to use technology wisely. Together, these literacies form the broader competency we describe as Onlife Literacy.
Artificial intelligence is not waiting somewhere in our children’s future. It has already entered the social media platforms, messaging apps, search tools, classrooms, games, and digital environments they use every day.
The goal should not be to frighten children about AI, nor should it be to encourage unquestioning adoption. Our responsibility is to help youth and teens recognize when AI is present, understand how it influences their experiences, evaluate its outputs critically, protect their privacy, consider the ethical consequences of its use, and know when trusted human judgment should remain the final authority.
The ultimate goal has never been to raise children who are merely technologically capable. Our responsibility is to raise young people who understand when technology deserves their trust, when it requires verification, when it should be questioned, and when human wisdom, empathy, experience, and relationships matter more than the answer appearing on a screen. In the age of artificial intelligence, that may be one of the most important forms of literacy we can teach.
