Here at The White Hatter, we do not recommend providing an iPhone or iPad as a child’s primary device for those under the age of 16. These are incredibly powerful tools, essentially supercomputers in a child’s pocket, with access to messaging, cameras, apps, browsers, games, social media, artificial intelligence tools, and an almost unlimited amount of online content.

However, we also recognize the reality that some parents and caregivers will still choose to provide their child with an Apple device. If that is the decision, then intentional setup becomes critically important. An iPhone or iPad should never be handed to a child straight out of the box without first considering safety, privacy, distraction, content access, communication settings, and family expectations.

This guide was created to help parents and caregivers better understand how to configure an iPhone or iPad in a way that supports safer and more developmentally appropriate use. The goal is not to create a perfect solution, because no device setting can do that. Rather, the goal is to help parents scaffold use, reduce unnecessary risk, limit distractions, and create an environment where the device supports communication, learning, and safety instead of becoming a source of harm, conflict, or constant distraction.
