Part 3:The Psychology Of Persuasion: The Battle For The Mind And Soul

Caveat: This is the third and final instalment in our three-part series, “Why We Push Back Hard Against the Prevailing Narrative and Advocate for a More Balanced Approach.” (1)(2) 


We pay close attention to research specific to how technology interacts with humanity, regardless of the discipline it comes from. Recently, we read a December 2025 NATO report titled “Cognitive Warfare.” As we worked through it, the parallels to today’s highly polarized conversations about youth, teens, and their use of technology, the internet, and social media, especially when it comes to misinformation and disinformation, became hard to ignore. This article shares several of the moments where the principles discussed in that report directly reframed how we understand the psychology of persuasion now shaping debates around youth, teens, and their use of technology, the internet, and social media.


Public discussion about teens, technology, and social media is often intense and emotional. Parents and caregivers are bombarded with headlines and narratives claiming screens are destroying childhood, social platforms are irredeemably harmful, or tech use among youth leads inevitably to mental health crises. Some of this conversation is grounded in evidence, but much of it reflects communication strategies  familiar from research on cognitive warfare. (3)


Cognitive persuasion strategies go beyond simple propaganda or information operations, aiming to shape how people think, make decisions, and interpret reality. It focuses on influencing cognition, not just information flows. The concept emphasizes how digital technologies, emotional messaging, and psychological tactics can affect public perceptions and behaviours. This framework can help us understand how misinformation and disinformation targeted at parents, caregivers, and policy makers, functions in relation to youth and digital life in much the same way. 


Influence on Attitudes and Behaviours


Cognitive persuasion strategies highlight how actors design messages to influence attitudes, decisions, and behaviours, not just disseminate facts. This is evident in narratives aimed at parents and caregivers that frame technology use in absolute, fear based terms. Stories that exaggerate or misrepresent risks around social media, like those mentioned in the second article of this 3 part series, can trigger strong emotional reactions, fuel anxiety, and undermine a parent or caregiver’s ability to weigh evidence calmly. The goal in cognitive persuasion is often to induce fear, confusion, or mistrust so that people react instinctively and emotionally rather than deliberately. These dynamics mirror what we are currently witnessing in polarized discussions about youth screen time, smartphone addiction, or digital safety. 


Exploiting Cognitive Biases and Emotional Responses


Central to the cognitive persuasion framework is the use of narratives that resonate emotionally, and exploit known cognitive biases. Humans are more likely to share information that confirms their fears or beliefs, and emotionally charged messages travel faster online. Misinformation about youth technology often plays to anxieties about safety, development, and identity, making these messages especially sticky. By triggering emotional responses, misinformation  and disinformation can spread widely even when it lacks solid evidence.


Narrative Framing and Simplification


In both geopolitical cognitive persuasion campaigns and parental or caregiver discourse, simple and dramatic narratives spread more easily than nuanced ones. Cognitive persuasion research notes that disinformation campaigns often frame stories to be easily understood and widely shared. Information targeting parents sometimes uses similar simplification such as complex issues like algorithmic design, adolescent psychology, and digital wellness get reduced to stark good vs evil frames. These narratives are easy to grasp, but they sidestep the complexity that responsible discussion requires. This aligns with how cognitive persuasion reframes debates to make them more polarizing and less open to critical examination. 


Use of Technology and Networks


Cognitive persuasion highlights how digital technologies amplify influence operations. Algorithms, bot networks, and coordinated social campaigns spread content rapidly and broadly. In the context of parenting and technology, automated amplification and social echo chambers make certain narratives appear mainstream even when they are not supported by good evidence based research. This dynamic reflects patterns seen in broader cognitive persuasion efforts, where digital infrastructure itself becomes part of the mechanism for shaping perception. 


Trust, Polarization, and Decision-Making


One key risk cognitive persuasion identifies is the erosion of trust in institutions and public discourse. When parents and caregivers encounter conflicting claims about technology and teens, whether from media, advocacy groups, or social networks, it can weaken trust in experts, educators, and even other parents or caregivers. This mirrors the broader goal of cognitive persuasion to create mistrust so that people rely more on emotion, anecdote, or community echo chambers rather than balanced evidence. 


Seeing these mechanisms through the lens of cognitive persuasion principles clarifies why conversations about youth and technology can feel heated, confusing, and polarized.


Misinformation and disinformation shape not just what parents know, but how they think and feel about digital risks. Emotional messaging and simplistic narratives can crowd out nuanced understanding.


Digital platforms and algorithmic sharing amplify the most engaging content, not the most accurate. Messages that trigger fear or outrage spread quickly, and reinforcing cognitive biases.


Trust in expertise erodes when conflicting narratives are loudest, not most credible. This mirrors the trust erosion cognitive persuasion warns about when disinformation targets broader audiences.


If the goal is to reduce the impact of misleading narratives, the response must go beyond fact-checking. Cognitive persuasion emphasis on resilience suggests three areas for strengthening how parents engage in these conversations:


#1/ Critical media literacy. Helping parents recognize emotional triggers, understand how platforms amplify content, and evaluate evidence can improve decision-making about technology and youth.


#2/ Open dialogue with varied perspectives. Encouraging balanced discussions that acknowledge both benefits and risks of technology use helps counter polarizing narratives.


#3/ Reliable information networks. Trusted sources of research, context, and guidance can offer an anchor in a sea of conflicting messages, reinforcing thoughtful judgment over reaction. 


After reading NATO’s cognitive warfare framework, we believe it offers a useful way to understand how some are utilizing misinformation and disinformation aimed at parents and caregivers in the context of youth, teens, technology, and social media. These efforts influence how people think, feel, and decide by exploiting emotional responses, digital networks, and cognitive biases. Recognizing these dynamics is the first step toward creating discussions grounded in evidence rather than fear, and toward helping parents separate signal from noise in a complex onlife world.
