Houston, We Have a Problem: When Students Misspell or Use Poor Grammar on Purpose to Avoid AI Accusations

This week, while teaching at a high school, we heard something from students that caused us to go hmmmmmm!
Several students shared with us that it is now common practice to deliberately misspell words or leave small grammar errors in assignments. Not because they do not know better, but because they are afraid of being accused of using AI tools like ChatGPT. That should concern every parent, caregiver, and educator.
This is not about students trying to cheat the system using AI, it’s about students trying to protect themselves in an environment where the rules feel unclear, the tools are poorly understood, and the consequences feel unpredictable.
Mistakes are supposed to be part of learning. Drafting, revising, editing, and improving writing are foundational academic skills. When students intentionally make their work worse to avoid suspicion, something has gone sideways. We are now seeing fear shape behaviour instead of curiosity.
From a student’s perspective, the message feels simple. If your work looks “too good,” you might get flagged, however, if it looks imperfect, you are safer. That is a powerful incentive to aim lower, not higher. Over time, this teaches the wrong lesson. It tells students that clarity, polish, and strong writing are liabilities rather than goals.
Some schools, and individual teachers, are turning to AI detection software as a way to address concerns about plagiarism related to student use of generative AI. The problem is that these tools are not reliable enough to be used as a primary or decisive measure. Research consistently shows that AI detectors produce false positives, meaning original, student written work can be incorrectly flagged as AI generated. This risk is not theoretical, it has been documented across multiple studies. (1)
Students who are non-native English speakers are disproportionately impacted (2), as are students who write in a clear, concise, and structured manner. Ironically, the very qualities educators often encourage can increase the likelihood of a student being suspected of misconduct. At the same time, students who struggle with grammar or organization may be less likely to trigger these systems.
Studies evaluating AI detection tools have also demonstrated that even verified, human written texts, including material produced long before generative AI existed, like from the Bible, can be labeled as AI-generated. (3) These findings underscore a fundamental limitation of current detection technologies. They do not reliably distinguish between human and AI authorship, making them an unstable foundation for academic integrity decisions. When used without caution, these tools risk undermining trust, fairness, and due process in educational settings rather than protecting them.
When students know this, they adapt. Misspellings, awkward phrasing, and intentional roughness become shields. That is not academic integrity, that’s student risk management on their part.
When youth and teens tell us they are intentionally lowering the quality of their work, they are telling us something important.
They do not feel trusted.
They do not feel the process is fair, especially when they see teachers using it.
They do not feel safe asking questions about how to use emerging AI tools responsibly.
The feedback from these teens was clear, instead of learning how AI works, where it can help, and where it crosses a line, they are learning how to hide it’s use which is not preparing them for the real world where AI is here to stay. Here’s the reality, AI will be part of their future education, work, and creative lives, and learning avoidance instead of literacy puts them at a disadvantage.
This is not an argument for unrestricted use of AI in schools. Boundaries matter, expectations matter, and academic honesty still matters. What does not work is pretending AI does not exist or treating every student as a suspect.
Students need clear guidance surrounding the use of AI. They need to know what is allowed, what is not, and why. They need assignments that value thinking, process, and reflection, not just polished output. They need opportunities to explain their work, show drafts, and demonstrate understanding in multiple ways.
Human communication is constantly shaped by the cultural and technological environments we live in. The rise of artificial intelligence and its integration into everyday digital spaces means people are exposed to AI generated language more than ever before. This exposure influences how individuals choose words, construct sentences, and present ideas in both written and spoken communication. In some cases, researchers have found measurable shifts in human language use that align with patterns common in AI outputs, suggesting that people are unconsciously adopting vocabulary and structures that resemble what they encounter online through AI tools and digital platforms. This reflects a broader historical process where language evolves in response to new technologies and social practices, just as writing, printing, and the internet have reshaped communication in past eras.
Several empirical studies support this notion. (4) Analyses of millions of hours of spoken content show increases in the use of specific words and phrasing associated with AI language models following the release of widely used tools. These trends suggest youth and teens are incorporating AI like word and grammar choices into their everyday speech. Research on digital communication also describes a feedback loop in which AI generated language influences human expression, which in turn shapes future AI training data and online norms. In addition, phenomena such as ‘algospeak’ illustrate how platform dynamics and automated moderation systems drive users to adopt new forms of expression that can spread into offline language use. Across history, language has always adapted to cultural shifts and new mediums of communication. The current moment, with AI as a pervasive influence on how we compose and interpret text, represents the latest chapter in that ongoing evolution.
The real solution when it comes to the misuse of AI is not better detection, it is better education.
We need to shift from “catching AI use” to teaching AI literacy. That includes how these tools work, their limitations, their risks, and their appropriate uses. It also includes honest conversations about integrity that do not rely on fear.
When youth and teens feel trusted and informed, they stop trying to game the system. When expectations are clear and fair, students aim higher again. If youth and teens are intentionally misspelling words, or using poor grammar to stay out of trouble, that is not a student problem, that’s a system problem. This challenge is one we need to address now, before fear becomes the default way our kids learn to navigate technology.
