Blocking Intentional Pedagogical Use of AI In Schools Isn’t a Strategy

Caveat - Across North America, we are beginning to see a growing movement among some parents and caregivers calling for the restriction, or even outright prohibition, of artificial intelligence in schools. These concerns are understandable. AI has emerged at an unprecedented pace, and many families are understandably worried about its potential impact on learning, academic integrity, privacy, critical thinking, and child development. When a technology evolves this quickly, it is natural for adults to question whether it belongs in the classroom.


However, we believe that blocking the intentional, educator guided pedagogical use of artificial intelligence is unlikely to prepare students for the world they are already entering. While calls for outright bans may feel like a sensible way to reduce uncertainty or risk, they are often driven by understandable concerns about a technology that many parents and caregivers are still learning to understand themselves. Rather than responding with prohibition alone, we believe the more effective approach is to equip students, educators, and families with the knowledge, skills, and judgment needed to use AI thoughtfully, ethically, and responsibly. In this article, we explain why intentional AI education, grounded in sound pedagogy and guided by trained educators, offers a stronger path forward than attempting to keep artificial intelligence out of classrooms altogether.


Artificial intelligence is no longer a future issue, like it or not, it has already become part of the daily lives of many youth and teenagers. Whether they are using AI to help with homework, generate images, answer questions, write stories, or simply satisfy their curiosity, today’s youth are learning to interact with these systems regardless of whether adults, including educators, are ready for them or not.


This is why we believe that waiting for schools to provide perfect answers is not the best approach. Every month that meaningful conversations about artificial intelligence are postponed, young people continue to develop habits on their own. Some of those habits may be positive, but others may include relying on AI without thinking critically, accepting answers without verification, using AI to avoid learning difficult concepts, or hiding their use because they fear being accused of cheating, something commonly known as “cognitive offloading”. Like any habit, these behaviours become more difficult to change the longer they continue unchecked.


This is not an argument against artificial intelligence. Rather, it is an argument for education before dependency. Just as we teach youth and teens how to evaluate information they find online instead of simply banning websites, we now need to teach them how to engage with artificial intelligence thoughtfully, ethically, and responsibly.


This is also why we believe schools cannot afford to adopt a “wait and see” approach. Artificial intelligence is not a passing trend that will simply disappear or stabilize on its own. Choosing to wait for perfect policies, complete curriculum guidance, or absolute clarity before taking action is, in itself, a decision, and one with consequences. While adults continue debating the best way to respond, students are already learning from AI every day. If they are left to navigate these technologies without guidance, they may develop habits that are difficult to reverse, such as trusting AI generated responses without verification, allowing AI to replace their own thinking, or concealing their use because they worry it will be perceived as academic dishonesty. The longer these behaviours become normalized, the more challenging they become to change.


The schools that will be most successful in preparing students for the future are unlikely to be those with the largest technology budgets or the newest AI platforms. Instead, they will be the schools that intentionally invest in digital literacy, AI literacy, critical thinking, ethical decision making, and open discussions about both the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence. Equally important, they will empower educators with the knowledge, confidence, professional development, and trust they need to lead these conversations. Preparing students for an AI enabled future is not primarily about purchasing better technology, it’s about helping young people develop better judgment.


Parents and caregivers play an equally important role. AI education should not begin and end in the classroom. Families can help children develop healthy habits by asking questions such as, “How did the AI come up with that answer?”, “How do you know the information is accurate?”, “Could there be another perspective?”, “What information might the AI have missed?”, or “When would it be better to solve this problem without AI?” These conversations encourage children to move beyond simply accepting answers and begin developing the judgment, curiosity, and healthy skepticism that technology itself cannot provide.


One of the greatest misconceptions surrounding artificial intelligence is that success will depend on how well someone can operate AI tools. In reality, today’s children already demonstrate an impressive ability to learn new technologies with very little instruction. Learning how to write a prompt, generate an image, or ask an AI chatbot a question is relatively easy. The far more important skill is knowing when AI should be used, when it should not be used, and when a human being must remain at the centre of the decision.


As artificial intelligence becomes integrated into workplaces, universities, healthcare, business, and everyday life, using AI will quickly become an expected skill rather than a competitive advantage. Employers of the future are unlikely to ask whether someone knows how to use AI, they will simply assume they do.


What will distinguish tomorrow’s graduates is something much more enduring, that being a user’s judgment. Can they recognize misinformation? Can they identify bias in AI-generated responses? Can they verify facts before sharing them? Can they think creatively instead of accepting the first answer an AI provides? Can they recognize situations where empathy, ethics, lived experience, and human relationships matter more than speed and automation? These are deeply human skills, and as artificial intelligence becomes more capable, they will become even more valuable.


This is why we continue to emphasize what we call “The Human Element.” Technology will continue to evolve at an extraordinary pace, but qualities such as curiosity, integrity, empathy, wisdom, resilience, ethical reasoning, and critical thinking remain uniquely human strengths. These are the characteristics that parents, caregivers, educators, and mentors help cultivate every day.


Preparing children for an AI enabled onlife world is not about raising the generation that uses artificial intelligence the most, it’s about raising a generation that understands how to use AI wisely, questions its outputs thoughtfully, recognizes its limitations, and understands when human conversation, human judgment, human creativity, and human relationships are the better answer.


The future will not belong to those who simply know how to use artificial intelligence, that will increasingly become a basic expectation. The future will belong to those who know when to trust AI, when to question it, when to verify it, and when to set it aside because only a human being can provide the wisdom, compassion, creativity, and ethical judgment that no algorithm can replace.


It’s our position that schools are uniquely positioned to prepare students for an AI enabled future because they are one of the few places where every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to develop these essential skills. While parents and caregivers play a critical role in shaping values and guiding conversations at home, not every family has the same level of technological knowledge, confidence, or available time to keep pace with rapidly evolving artificial intelligence. Schools provide a common learning environment where all students can be introduced to foundational AI literacy, digital citizenship, ethical reasoning, and critical thinking in a structured, age appropriate, and equitable way.


Schools also offer something that artificial intelligence itself cannot provide, guided human learning. A skilled educator does far more than explain how an AI tool works, they help students ask better questions, challenge assumptions, compare different viewpoints, recognize bias, evaluate evidence, collaborate with others, and reflect on the ethical implications of using AI. These conversations become even more valuable when they occur in classrooms where students can learn from one another, respectfully debate ideas, and encounter perspectives that differ from their own. Artificial intelligence may generate information, but it cannot replace the rich social learning that occurs when students think together under the guidance of a trusted educator.


Equally important, schools have always adapted to prepare students for significant technological and societal change. Many schools taught students how to evaluate information on the internet, how to become responsible digital citizens, how to conduct research ethically, and how to recognize online misinformation. Artificial intelligence is the next step in that evolution. AI literacy should not be viewed as a separate subject, but as an extension of the critical thinking, information literacy, media literacy, and ethical decision making that effective schools have long sought to develop.


Perhaps most importantly, schools can normalize healthy and transparent conversations about AI use. When students believe that every interaction with AI will automatically be viewed as cheating, they are more likely to hide their use, preventing meaningful discussions about appropriate and inappropriate applications of the technology. By creating clear expectations and emphasizing responsible rather than prohibited use, educators can help students develop honesty, accountability, and sound judgment. These are habits that will serve them not only throughout their education, but throughout their careers and everyday lives.


This is why blocking the intentional educator guided pedagogical use of AI in schools, is unlikely to prepare students for the world they are entering. The question is no longer whether today’s students will encounter AI, because they already do. The real question is whether they will learn to use it through thoughtful education guided by trusted adults or through trial and error guided largely by algorithms, influencers, and their peers. Schools remain one of the best places to ensure that artificial intelligence strengthens learning without replacing the uniquely human thinking, relationships, and judgment that education has always been designed to cultivate.


One important caveat is that meaningful AI literacy in schools depends on educators receiving high quality professional learning and ongoing support. Simply placing artificial intelligence into classrooms without first investing in teacher capacity is unlikely to produce the thoughtful, intentional, and pedagogically sound learning experiences that students need. Effective AI education requires more than learning how to operate a chatbot or generate content. Educators need opportunities to understand both the capabilities and limitations of AI, explore its ethical implications, develop classroom strategies that promote critical thinking rather than dependency, and learn how to integrate these technologies in ways that enhance, rather than replace, student learning.


Through our work with schools and school districts across Canada and internationally, we have found that many educators are eager to embrace these conversations but have not yet been provided with sufficient professional development, practical guidance, or dedicated time to build their confidence. Too often, teachers are expected to navigate this rapidly evolving technology on their own while simultaneously addressing concerns about academic integrity, student privacy, assessment, and equitable access. If we expect educators to prepare students for an AI enabled future, we must first ensure that educators themselves are given the knowledge, resources, and institutional support necessary to lead with confidence. Investing in teacher learning is not an optional addition to AI education, it’s one of its essential foundations.


We also believe that schools also have an important responsibility beyond educating students. They should actively engage parents and caregivers in the conversation by offering regular AI education evenings, workshops, or webinars that explain how artificial intelligence is being used in the classroom, why educators are choosing particular instructional approaches, and what safeguards are in place to promote responsible, ethical, and age appropriate use. Transparency builds trust, and when families understand the educational purpose behind AI integration, they are better equipped to support their children’s learning and are less likely to view AI as either something to fear or something to embrace uncritically.


These learning opportunities should extend beyond simply explaining school policies. They should also provide parents and caregivers with practical, hands on experiences that help them develop their own AI literacy. Many adults feel that their children understand artificial intelligence better than they do, which can leave them feeling uncertain about how to guide conversations or establish healthy expectations at home. Parent and caregiver education sessions can help bridge this gap by demonstrating how AI systems work, exploring both their strengths and limitations, discussing issues such as privacy, bias, misinformation, and cognitive offloading, and offering practical strategies for using AI to support learning rather than replace it. When parents and caregivers develop confidence alongside their children, they are better positioned to reinforce at home the same critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and digital literacy skills being taught in the classroom.


This kind of partnership between schools and families has the potential to create a more consistent learning environment for students. When educators, parents , and caregivers, share a common understanding of how AI should be used, young people receive consistent messages about responsibility, honesty, curiosity, verification, and the importance of maintaining human judgment. Rather than receiving conflicting expectations at school and at home, students benefit from a shared approach that encourages thoughtful and intentional use of artificial intelligence.


The challenge, however, is one that schools have faced for decades. Parent  and caregiver education events, even on topics that families consistently identify as important, have historically attracted only a small percentage of parents and caregivers. Whether the subject is internet safety, mental health, bullying, substance use, digital citizenship, or now artificial intelligence, attendance is often far lower than educators hope. Another reality frequently shared with us by educators is that the parents and caregivers who attend these sessions are often those who are already actively engaged and seeking information. The families who may benefit the most from these conversations are often the least likely to be in the room.


We recently witnessed this firsthand while attending a parent education evening organized by a District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) that focused on the school district’s plans for integrating artificial intelligence into teaching and learning. This district serves approximately 8,000 students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Despite the significance of the topic and the opportunity for parents to ask questions directly of district leaders, only 26 parents attended.


This example is not intended to criticize those who were unable to attend. Parents and caregivers often juggle demanding work schedules, childcare responsibilities, extracurricular commitments, and countless competing priorities. Rather, it illustrates a longstanding challenge facing schools - providing valuable learning opportunities does not automatically translate into strong participation. If schools are serious about building AI literacy within their communities, they will need to think beyond the traditional one evening presentation and explore more flexible, accessible, and ongoing ways to engage families wherever they are.


Whether the topic has been internet safety, social media, substance use, bullying, mental health, or digital citizenship, attendance has often been disappointingly low despite widespread agreement that these issues matter. Busy schedules, competing family commitments, work obligations, transportation, childcare needs, and the mistaken belief that “this doesn’t apply to my family” all contribute to limited participation.


Artificial intelligence presents an opportunity to rethink how schools engage families. Rather than relying solely on a single evening presentation, schools could offer multiple ways for parents and caregivers to participate, including recorded webinars, short online learning modules, virtual question and answer sessions, newsletters, podcasts, resource guides, and AI demonstration videos that families can access at a time that fits their schedules. Meeting parents and caregivers where they are, instead of expecting everyone to attend a single in person event, is likely to reach a much broader audience.


Ultimately, if we believe that AI literacy is becoming as fundamental as digital literacy, then educating parents and caregivers cannot be viewed as an optional extra. Students spend only part of their day in school, while many of their most meaningful interactions with artificial intelligence occur at home. Preparing young people for an AI enabled world will require a genuine partnership between schools and families, where both are learning, asking questions, and adapting together. The goal should not be to make parents into AI experts, but to give them enough knowledge and confidence to remain trusted guides in their children’s lives as this technology continues to evolve.


We continue to believe that efforts by some parents and caregivers to prevent the intentional, educator guided pedagogical use of artificial intelligence in schools are unlikely to serve student’s long term interests. This is not because parents and caregivers are unimportant. On the contrary, parents and caregivers remain a child’s first and most influential teachers when it comes to values, character, and everyday decision making. However, classroom instruction is guided by educators who have specialized training in curriculum design, pedagogy, assessment, child development, and age appropriate teaching strategies. Their expertise extends beyond simply introducing a new technology, it involves helping students understand when and how artificial intelligence can support learning, when it should not be used, and how to think critically about its outputs. 


The most effective preparation for an AI enabled future will come from parents , caregivers, and educators working together, each contributing their unique strengths. Families provide the values and ongoing conversations that shape character, while schools provide the structured learning experiences that help students develop the knowledge, critical thinking, and ethical judgment needed to use artificial intelligence wisely and responsibly.
