AI Is Here & Now: Why We Need To Start Thinking Seriously About Its Economic, Social, and Public Safety Impact

This article is not about being anti-AI, at The White Hatter, we believe technology can bring significant benefits when it is developed, deployed, and used responsibly. AI is already helping people learn, create, research, organize, communicate, and solve problems in ways that were not possible even a year ago. However, recognizing those benefits does not mean ignoring the challenges. In fact, the more powerful a technology becomes, the more important it is that we talk honestly about its risks, responsibilities, and real world consequences.


Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept waiting somewhere in the future, it’s not an issue that will only matter when today’s children become adults. AI is already here, woven into many of the systems, services, and devices we use every day. It now influences how we search for information, how smartphones organize and predict our behaviour, how students complete schoolwork, how businesses operate, how social media platforms recommend content, how customer service questions are answered, how healthcare systems manage information, how some organizations screen job applicants, and how public safety agencies explore new tools.


For youth and teens, this matters because AI is not something separate from their daily lives. Increasingly, AI is built into the apps, platforms, games, learning tools, and online spaces they already use. Whether they recognize it or not, many youth and teens are already interacting with AI, being influenced by AI, and having information shaped by AI.


This is why the conversation needs to move beyond “AI is coming.” It has arrived. The more important question is whether we are helping families, schools, workplaces, and communities understand how it works, where it can help, where it can cause harm, and how to use it in ways that are safe, ethical, and informed.

That means the conversation can no longer be limited to whether AI is “good” or “bad.” That framing is too simple. A better question is this: are we preparing our families, schools, workplaces, communities, and governments for the economic, social, and public safety changes AI is already creating? The answer, in many cases, is not yet. However, this is something that we do in all our AI programs for students and parents that we offer here at the White Hatter.


The Economic Impact: Jobs Will Change, Not Just Disappear


Much of the public conversation around AI and the economy focuses on job loss. That concern is understandable. Generative AI can now write reports, summarize documents, produce images, analyze data, generate code, answer customer questions, and automate tasks that once required significant human time. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 examined employer expectations across 55 economies and found that employers expect major workforce transformation between 2025 and 2030, with AI and information-processing technologies among the key forces reshaping work and skills (1).  


However, the impact of AI will likely be more complicated than a simple “robots replace humans” narrative. Some jobs may disappear, some will be redesigned, and others will be created. Many workers will not be replaced by AI, but they may be replaced by people who know how to use AI more effectively, and that distinction matters.


The OECD has also noted that AI has the potential to improve productivity, but only if it is adopted in ways that actually strengthen organizations, support workers, and improve processes (2). Productivity gains are not automatic, they depend on how AI is implemented, who has access to it, and whether businesses and workers are trained to use it responsibly.  


This creates an important issue for parents, caregivers, and educators. Today’s youth are not just preparing for a digital economy, they are preparing for an AI-mediated economy. This means digital literacy can no longer be limited to typing, searching, posting, or basic coding. Youth also need to understand how AI tools work, where they can help, where they can mislead, how to verify AI generated information, how to protect their privacy, and how to use these tools ethically.


The economic risk is not just that AI may take jobs, the bigger risk is that some youth, workers, small businesses, and communities may be left behind because they were never given the education, access, or guidance needed to adapt. This is why “AI literacy” needs to become a core life skill.


The Social Impact: AI Is Changing How We Learn, Trust, Communicate, and Belong


AI is also changing the social fabric of everyday life, influencing how people get information, how they form opinions, how they create content, and how they interact with others online. For youth and teens, this is especially important. AI tools can help with brainstorming, tutoring, translation, accessibility, and creative expression. For a student who struggles with writing, AI can help organize ideas. For a young person with a disability, AI can improve access. For a teen learning a new concept, AI can provide an explanation in a way that feels more understandable. These are real benefits.


However, AI can also blur the line between authentic and artificial. Deepfake images, synthetic voices, AI-generated influencers, fake screenshots, fabricated evidence, and automated accounts can make it harder for people to know what is real. This creates challenges for trust, reputation, relationships, and mental wellness.


A teen can now be targeted with an AI generated nude image that never happened. A parent can receive a fake voice call that sounds like their child in distress. A student can rely on an AI generated answer that sounds confident but is factually wrong. A young person can build an emotional attachment to an AI companion that simulates care but has no real accountability, duty of care, or human understanding. This is not science fiction, these are challenges already emerging in schools, homes, and communities.


The social challenge is that AI does not just produce content, it can also shape perception. When a tool can generate believable words, images, voices, and video, media literacy becomes public literacy. Critical thinking becomes a safety skill, and verification needs to become a family habit.


The Public Safety Impact: AI Can Lower the Barrier To Harm


Public safety is another area where we need to pay close attention. AI can be used for good in emergency management, fraud detection, cybersecurity, accessibility, and victim support. However, like many powerful technologies, it can also be misused.


AI can help create more convincing phishing messages, clone voices, generate fake identification images, automate harassment, produce deepfake sexual content, assist cybercrime, and increase the speed and scale of online manipulation. NIST’s Generative AI Profile, released in 2024 as part of its AI Risk Management Framework work, identifies risks connected to generative AI and provides guidance for organizations trying to manage trustworthiness, safety, privacy, bias, misuse, and security concerns (3).  


For families, this means we need to update our safety conversations, it’s no longer enough to tell children, “Don’t talk to people you don’t know online,” or “Don’t believe everything you see.” Those statements are still useful for sure, but they need to be expanded.


Youth and teens now need to understand that a:


  • voice may not be the person it sounds like.


  • photo may not prove something happened. 


  • screenshot may be fabricated. 


  • message may have been generated by a bot. 


  •  romantic or supportive online interaction may be part of manipulation. 


  • fake image can still cause real harm.


Public safety agencies, schools, and governments also need to adapt:


  • Investigators will need training in AI enabled evidence issues. 


  • Schools will need policies that address AI misuse without overreacting or criminalizing every mistake. 


  • Communities will need better reporting pathways for deepfake abuse, fraud, and online exploitation. 


  • Legislators will need to understand the technology well enough to regulate harmful uses without banning beneficial ones.


This is where “safety by design” matters. We should not place the entire burden on parents, teachers, or youth to manage risks that are being amplified by powerful commercial systems. Companies developing and deploying AI tools need clear responsibilities around transparency, testing, child safety, privacy, data use, bias, and misuse prevention.


In Canada, the federal Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, known as AIDA, was proposed to create rules around responsible AI development and deployment, including safety and non-discrimination goals (4). However, Canada still faces an evolving AI governance landscape, and legal experts have noted that Canada remains without a comprehensive federal AI statute after AIDA did not proceed as part of Bill C-27.  This gap matters given that AI is moving quickly. Regulation, education, and public awareness are not keeping pace.


We Need Preparation, Not Panic


The wrong response to AI is panic. Fear based messaging often leads to avoidance, overreaction, or simplistic bans that do little to build real-world skills. However, the other wrong response is blind enthusiasm, where every new AI tool is treated as progress simply because it is new. 


What we need is preparation. Preparation means teaching youth how to use AI as a tool, not a substitute for thinking. It means helping workers understand how AI may affect their field before they are forced to adapt under pressure. It means helping parents recognize AI-enabled risks without becoming overwhelmed by them. It means helping schools build policies that distinguish between learning, cheating, experimentation, and harm. It means helping governments move beyond reactionary legislation and toward evidence-informed guardrails.


AI literacy should include several key skills that need to be taught early and reinforced often that include: 


  • understanding how AI generates content 


  • recognizing that AI can be wrong

 

  • protecting personal data

 

  • verifying information 


  • identifying synthetic media

 

  • understanding bias

 

  • using AI ethically, and 


  • knowing when human judgment matters most.


The Human Factor Still Matters Most


One of the biggest misunderstandings about artificial intelligence is the belief that it somehow removes the need for human judgment. In reality, the opposite is true. The more AI becomes part of our daily lives, the more important human judgment becomes. AI can produce content quickly, confidently, and convincingly, but that does not mean the information is accurate, fair, ethical, or complete.


AI can generate an answer, but a person still needs to determine whether that answer is correct. It can create an image, but a person still needs to consider whether that image is truthful, respectful, or harmful. It can summarize a document, article, or conversation, but a person still needs to ask what may have been missed, distorted, or left out. AI can also simulate empathy through carefully worded responses, but it cannot replace genuine human care, lived experience, accountability, or relationship.


This is especially important when we think about youth and teens. We do not want young people growing up believing that convenience is the same as wisdom, that speed is the same as truth, or that a tool that sounds caring is the same as a trusted person who actually cares. AI may be able to provide an instant response, but instant does not always mean accurate, healthy, or helpful.


Used well, AI can support learning, creativity, accessibility, problem-solving, and even safety. However, it should be seen as a tool that supports human thinking, not one that replaces it. Our goal should be to help young people use AI with curiosity, caution, and critical thinking, while also reminding them that compassion, judgment, trust, and meaningful human relationships remain irreplaceable.


What Parents, Educators, and Communities Can Do Now


Parents and caregiver can start by using AI with their children rather than only warning them about it. Sit down together and ask an AI tool a question. Then fact check the answer. Ask it to explain a concept, then compare that explanation to a trusted source. Show where it helps and where it fails. This turns AI from a mysterious technology into something that can be examined, questioned, and understood.


Educators can focus less on whether AI can be banned from learning environments, and more on how it can be used appropriately. Students need clear expectations such as:


  • When is AI allowed? 


  • When is it not? 


  • When must it be cited? 


  • How do students show their own thinking? 


  • How do we assess process, not just product?


Workplaces can support employees by offering training before displacement happens. AI adoption should not just be a cost-cutting exercise, it should include worker consultation, skill development, transparency, and ethical guidelines.


Governments can focus on practical regulation that targets real harms such as: 


  • deceptive synthetic media (deepfakes)


  • privacy violations


  • discriminatory automated decision-making


  • AI-enabled exploitation


  • unsafe deployment, and 


  • lack of accountability. 


The goal should not be to stop innovation, the goal should be to make innovation safer, more transparent, and more accountable.


AI is not coming, it is already here. The question is not whether youth, families, schools, workplaces, and communities will be affected by it. They already are. The question is whether we will respond with preparation or reaction, literacy or fear, thoughtful guardrails or after the fact damage control like we have done with legacy social media.


At The White Hatter, we believe the best path forward is not to run from technology, nor to blindly embrace it. The best path forward is to understand it, question it, use it wisely, and demand better from those who build and profit from it.


Yes, AI will bring opportunities and It will also bring significant challenges, both can be true at the same time. Our responsibility is to make sure that young people are not just consumers of this technology, but informed, capable, ethical, and resilient users of it. Digital literacy is no longer optional, it has become a core form of economic, social, and public safety literacy that every person needs to navigate today’s onlife world with confidence, awareness, and responsibility given the present and future impact of AI.
