In today's onlife world, smartphones have become a ubiquitous part of our lives, offering convenience, connectivity, information, and countless entertainment options at our fingertips. However, as parents, it's essential to recognize that fully functioning iPhones and Android phones are designed primarily for adults, NOT pre-teens or younger teens. Instead, opting for minimalist phones like the Sunbeam F1 Dove(1), the Wisephone (2), the Ghostphone (3), or the Pinwheel phone (4) can offer a more suitable and safer alternative for your child's needs, especially for those under the age of 16yrs.

Here are several reasons why we believe minimalist phones are better choices for pre-teens and young teens:

  • Fully functioning smartphones come with a significant number of apps, social media platforms, and games that can easily distract young minds from their responsibilities, such as homework or chores. Minimalist phones, on the other hand, typically offer only essential features like calling, texting, taking pictures or video thus reducing the temptation to spend excessive time on non-productive activities.

  • With unrestricted internet access, children using fully functioning smartphones often stumble upon inappropriate content or engage in interactions that are not suitable for their age. Minimalist phones usually have limited or no browsing capabilities, helping to shield children from potentially harmful online content.

  • Excessive screen use has been linked to various negative effects on children's physical and mental well-being. By using minimalist phones with limited features, parents can encourage their children to spend more time engaging in physical activities, socializing with friends face-to-face, and pursuing hobbies that don't involve screens.

  • Fully functioning smartphones are vulnerable to cybersecurity threats such as malware, phishing attacks, and unauthorized access to personal information. Minimalist phones, with their simplified operating systems and limited app ecosystems, are inherently less susceptible to these risks, providing parents with peace of mind regarding their child's online safety.

  • Minimalist phones are often more affordable than fully functioning iPhones or Android phones, making them a practical choice for parents who want to provide their children with a means of communication without breaking the bank.

  • Introducing children to minimalist phones can be an opportunity to teach them about responsible technology usage. By starting with a device that offers basic functionality, parents can gradually introduce more advanced features as their child demonstrates maturity and understanding of digital etiquette (5).

Currently, the Sunbeam F1 Dove phone and the PinWheel phone are the only two minimalist phone options accessible for purchase with a Canadian credit card and direct shipping to Canada from the manufacturer. Alternatively, if you have a contact residing in the USA, they can purchase either the Wisephone or Ghostphone on your behalf, and forward it to your address, labeling it as a "gift" from the USA.

Some Canadian families have shared with us that they have utilized a "parcel forwarding service" to obtain phones unavailable for direct shipping to Canada, with deliveries to Canadian addresses for a modest fee (typically below $100). Two companies mentioned to us by a couple of parents were:

While we haven't personally used these services, other parents have successfully, though we personally cannot guarantee their reliability. Nonetheless, it could be a viable option if you lack a US contact for shipping the phone to your home address. One caveat to bear in mind - the potential inability to return the phone directly to the company if dissatisfied with the product using this shipping method.

Although the Ghost Phone Plus, WisePhone, the Sunbeam F1 Dove phone, and the PinWheel cannot provide a guarantee regarding their phone’s compatibility within Canada, we conducted tests on the Canadian Rogers Cell Network and found that all four phones functioned flawlessly without encountering any issues.

While fully functioning iPhones and Android phones may be suitable for older teens and adults, they are NOT the best choice for pre-teens and younger teens in most cases. Too often, we have seen unfortunate online incidents with fully functioning iPhone and Android phones possessed by pre-teens and younger teens that are just too powerful for their age and development. Instead, consider investing in minimalist phones like the Sunbeam F1 Dove, the Wisephone, the Ghostphone, or the Pinwheel phone, which offer essential communication features while minimizing distractions and potential risks associated with excessive screen use and online exposure. By making informed decisions about your child's technology usage, you can help foster healthier habits and enhance their safety in today's onlife world.
