Teaching Digital Literacy and Internet Safety in the Age of AI: Why Presenters and Educators Must Adapt

For decades, educators, presenters, and digital safety advocates have worked to help young people navigate the online world. The fundamentals of digital literacy and internet safety such as critical thinking, privacy awareness, online reputation, and respectful communication, have always been the backbone of this work. What has changed, however, is the AI environment in which today’s youth and teens live and learn.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is not on the horizon, it is here, woven into the platforms and tools youth, teens, and adults, use every day. For those of us who teach digital literacy and online safety, this reality cannot be ignored. If we continue teaching from a pre-AI legacy perspective, we risk leaving our students unprepared for the challenges, and opportunities, that will define their online lives. We would also argue that some of that legacy perspective is no longer relevant, given how AI has disrupted this space.
AI has disrupted and rewritten the rules of the internet. It influences how information is created, shared, and consumed. For youth and teens, this means the stakes are higher, the risks are more sophisticated, but yet the opportunities are also more powerful.
So what are some of the evolving risks?
Hyper-Realistic Deception:
Fake accounts once gave themselves away through awkward grammar, repeated stolen images, or obvious inconsistencies. AI now strips away those warning signs. Entirely new profile photos can be generated of people who don’t exist, making traditional verification methods like reverse image searches useless. Chatbots trained on natural language can carry conversations indistinguishable from a human’s, while voice cloning software can mimic a peer’s voice during a gaming chat or call. This realism creates an environment where young people cannot rely on the cues they once used to identify fake interactions, which raises the difficulty of staying safe online.
Scalable Grooming and Exploitation
Traditionally, grooming required time, patience, and interpersonal skills. Offenders had to build trust gradually, one child at a time. AI removes those barriers by automating the early stages of interaction acting as icebreakers, small talk, and identity building. Offenders can now initiate dozens of conversations at once, scaling their reach in ways that were previously impossible. Once emotional leverage is established, they step in personally. This efficiency means more young people can be targeted, and offenders who previously lacked the patience or skill to groom may now be emboldened.
Information Disorder
Misinformation and disinformation have always been part of the online landscape, but AI accelerates and amplifies the problem. Tools can now generate realistic but false news articles, create manipulated videos, or spread convincing fake social media posts within minutes. The speed and quality with which false information spreads makes digital literacy not just important but essential. Students must understand that the volume and polish of information do not guarantee its accuracy.
Erosion of Trust
Perhaps the most concerning outcome is the erosion of trust in digital spaces. If youth cannot be sure whether the person on the other end of a conversation is real, or whether the video they are watching has been manipulated, their confidence in online interactions begins to crumble. This distrust does not just affect friendships or entertainment, it seeps into education, civic engagement, and even democratic participation. The very fabric of digital citizenship is threatened when trust becomes fragile.
So what are the expanding opportunities or the flip side to AI?
Personalized Learning Tools
AI has the potential to become a powerful ally in education. Adaptive learning systems and AI tutors can provide personalized explanations, answer student questions in real time, and adjust content to meet a learner’s unique needs. This personalization allows struggling students to get additional support while advanced learners can move ahead, ensuring that everyone has a chance to succeed at their own pace.
Creativity and innovation
Beyond academics, AI fuels creativity. Youth and teens can use generative tools to produce music, art, stories, or even code, experimenting in ways that might have been impossible without access to expensive software or advanced training. This democratization of creativity allows more young people to explore their talents and imagine themselves as innovators.
Accessibility
For students with disabilities, AI offers unprecedented accessibility. Real time captioning, speech-to-text transcription, and AI-driven translation tools can open new doors for participation in classrooms and social spaces. These supports can help ensure that every student, regardless of ability, is included in the learning process and empowered to engage online.
Skill Development For the Future
AI literacy is not just a classroom concern, it is becoming a workforce necessity. As industries integrate AI into daily operations, students will be expected to understand how these tools function and how to use them responsibly. Teaching AI awareness and critical use now prepares youth and teens for the realities of tomorrow’s job market, giving them an advantage in fields where these skills are rapidly becoming baseline requirements.
Youth and teens today live in an AI-mediated world, often without even realizing it. Every time they scroll through a social media feed shaped by recommendation algorithms, ask a homework helper like a chatbot for assistance, or interact with a platform that subtly tailors their experience, they are engaging with AI. These systems are woven so deeply into their daily lives that they form the backdrop to how young people learn, communicate, and play. If educators choose to ignore this reality, they leave students to navigate it alone. Most will turn to peers or trial and error, approaches that not only limit their understanding but also increase their exposure to risk.
Meanwhile, offenders and bad actors have shown a remarkable ability to adapt quickly to new technology. History has taught us that those who exploit online spaces for harm are often early adopters of emerging tools, and AI has proven no different. We are already witnessing AI being used to create more convincing scams, impersonate trusted individuals, and manipulate youth through deceptive tactics. If educators are not aware of how these threats are evolving, they cannot teach students to recognize or resist them. Staying ahead requires us to keep pace with how offenders are leveraging AI, not lagging several steps behind, this is something that we pride ourselves on here at the White Hatter!
Young people also notice when adults are out of step with the technology that shapes their lives. Teens have a strong sense of authenticity, and they quickly pick up when a presenter or educator lacks credibility on a topic they know firsthand. If an adult avoids discussing AI or demonstrates limited understanding of it, students disengage. Even worse, they may begin to dismiss the broader lessons on safety, privacy, and ethics, assuming that if the adult is behind on one issue, their perspective on others is equally outdated. To keep trust and attention, educators must show that they understand the world their students live in.
Adapting to the age of AI is not just a matter of relevance but of ethical responsibility. Educators are entrusted with preparing youth for the world as it is, not as it once was. Leaving AI out of digital literacy and internet safety instruction denies students the preparation they need to handle challenges they are already facing. Ignoring AI is not a neutral act, it is a failure to safeguard and empower the next generation. Meeting this responsibility means acknowledging the realities of the present, equipping students with knowledge, and ensuring they are ready for the digital now.
Critical thinking about AI generated content is one of the most important skills young people can learn today. Students must understand that AI can produce information, images, and videos that look authentic but may be completely fabricated. Teaching them to pause before reacting, to verify the source of what they see, and to ask questions about credibility is essential. For example, when encountering a shocking news headline or a viral video, they should know how to run a reverse image search, compare the story with reporting from reputable outlets, or analyze metadata when possible. These habits give youth the tools to resist manipulation and separate fact from fiction in a digital world where appearances can no longer be trusted.
Equally critical is helping students understand algorithms and the concept of dark patterns. The content they see online is not random, it is curated by AI systems designed to capture attention and maximize time spent on the platform. Features like infinite scroll, autoplay, or constant notifications are not conveniences, they are deliberate design choices meant to exploit human psychology. Educators should guide students in recognizing these patterns and questioning how much of their online experience is being shaped for them rather than by them. By understanding the role of algorithms, students can begin to take back control over their digital consumption and make more intentional choices.
Privacy and data awareness form another cornerstone of AI era digital literacy. AI runs on data, and young people are some of the most prolific data generators, often without realizing it. Every post, click, and location share contributes to a digital dossier that platforms collect and monetize. Educators need to emphasize why this matters, showing students how personal data can be used to target ads, influence behaviour, or even compromise security. Practical steps, such as reviewing app permissions, turning off unnecessary location sharing, or limiting what they disclose publicly, may seem small, but they are powerful ways to protect privacy in a world driven by data-hungry AI systems.
In addition to understanding risks, students must reflect on their own responsibilities when using AI. Ethical and responsible use should be part of every digital literacy conversation. Cheating on assignments with AI generated answers, creating offensive material, or using AI to deceive or manipulate others all carry consequences that go beyond the screen. Discussing these issues openly helps youth think critically about what is appropriate, what is harmful, and how to strike a balance between innovation and responsibility. These conversations prepare students to be not just skilled users of technology, but also ethical digital users.
Resilience and digital wellbeing cannot be overlooked. AI should support human interaction, not replace meaningful human connection. Students need to learn how to balance their online and offline worlds, recognizing when it is time to log off, manage stress, or seek help from trusted adults. Building resilience means equipping them with strategies to set healthy boundaries, avoid over-reliance on technology, and use digital tools in ways that enhance rather than undermine their mental and emotional well-being. By framing wellness as an integral part of digital literacy, educators help youth develop habits that will serve them for a lifetime.
AI is not coming, it is already here, shaping the onlife world our youth inhabit. For presenters and educators, the responsibility is clear, adapt or risk irrelevance. By educating ourselves, updating our teaching practices, and approaching AI with a balanced, fact-based lens, we ensure that students are prepared not only to face online risks but also to seize opportunities.
