Nostalgia & AI Juvenoic Slop: Facts Not Fear!

This AI generated slop appeared in our social media feed recently, and it captures something we are seeing with increasing frequency online, nostalgic images comparing childhood “back then” with childhood “today”.

The message isn’t particularly subtle. Childhood was better before smartphones and the internet arrived, technology changed everything, and today’s kids have somehow lost something previous generations had.
Perhaps parts of that story are true. Childhood certainly has changed, and we would never argue otherwise. Technology is unquestionably one of the many things that has contributed to that change, and there are legitimate evidence based discussions to be had about screen use, displacement, social media, gaming, smartphones, physical activity, sleep, attention, and the amount of time young people spend outside. However, acknowledging that technology has changed childhood is very different from claiming that technology explains every difference we see between childhood today and the childhood adults remember. The mistake occurs when an emotionally powerful image becomes a substitute for evidence explaining why childhood changed. That distinction matters, especially from a digital and media literacy perspective.
Nostalgia can have an almost hallucinogenic quality. It can soften the hardships, sharpen the good memories, and convince us that the childhood we remember is an accurate and complete representation of the childhood we actually lived. Psychologists sometimes refer to a related phenomenon as “rosy retrospection,” a cognitive bias in which people can remember past experiences more favourably than they evaluated those same experiences while they were actually occurring. Research examining memory has repeatedly demonstrated that our recollection of past experiences isn’t simply a perfect recording that our brain retrieves years later. Memory is reconstructive, and our present beliefs, emotions, and experiences can influence how we remember the past (1).
That doesn’t mean our childhood memories are fabricated, meaningless, or should simply be dismissed as nostalgia. Many adults genuinely did experience greater independence, more unsupervised outdoor play, different neighbourhood relationships, less scheduled activity, and considerably less digital entertainment than many young people experience today. Those differences are real and worth discussing. However, memory isn’t a neutral historical dataset either. We remember riding our bikes until the streetlights came on, but perhaps not the hours we spent sitting in front of the television. We remember playing outside with friends, but not necessarily the afternoons when nobody was available. We remember the freedom, adventure, friendships, and summers that seemed to last forever, while sometimes forgetting the boredom, loneliness, bullying, exclusion, family difficulties, dangers, and other less pleasant aspects of growing up.
This is an important distinction because nostalgia may accurately remember something that existed while still inaccurately explaining why it changed. The friction begins when we take our reconstructed version of childhood and assume it is also the childhood young people today should be living. When their childhood doesn’t look like ours, smartphones, gaming, social media, and technology can become convenient explanations for the difference. Sometimes technology may indeed be part of that explanation, but part of an explanation isn’t necessarily the explanation.
Here’s a simple example from our own experience. We have lived in our present home for more than 25 years. When we first moved into the neighbourhood, kids seemed to be everywhere. They played in the street, rode bikes, hung out together, and did many of the things nostalgic social media posts now suggest children rarely do. Today, there are far fewer kids outside on our street. It would therefore be incredibly easy for us to look out our window, compare what we see today with what we remember seeing 25 years ago, and conclude that smartphones must have driven all those kids indoors.
Except we know something about our neighbourhood that a photograph wouldn’t tell you. Most of those kids grew up. Many moved away, while their parents remained in the homes they purchased decades ago. There simply aren’t as many children living on our street today as there were when we first moved here. There are still several younger kids nearby, and throughout this past summer we regularly watched a group of about six of them outside together riding scooters and BMX bikes, practising tricks, laughing, talking, and doing many of the things kids have always done when they get together.
Our neighbourhood isn’t evidence that demographics explain what is happening everywhere in Canada, nor would we suggest that it is. In fact, that’s precisely the point. Looking out one window, whether ours or somebody else’s, tells us very little about why childhood looks different. A quieter street could reflect technology use, but it could also reflect changing demographics, fewer children living nearby, reduced independent mobility, parental concerns about safety, traffic, neighbourhood design, organized activities, homework, socioeconomic circumstances, changing family schedules, or several of these factors interacting at the same time. A photograph can’t tell us which explanation is correct, and neither can an AI generated picture designed specifically to reinforce a particular narrative.
Demographics are nevertheless one part of this larger picture that deserves consideration. Canada’s fertility rate has fallen substantially over the decades. According to Statistics Canada, Canada’s total fertility rate reached a record low of 1.25 children per woman in 2024. Canadians are also having children later in life, with the average age of mothers at childbirth reaching approximately 31.8 years in 2024, compared with 26.7 years in 1976. Statistics Canada describes this as part of a broader transformation in fertility and family patterns that includes delayed motherhood, childlessness by choice or circumstance, education, labour force participation, changing social norms, and other socioeconomic influences (2).
There are complicated reasons behind these changes, and we should be careful not to oversimplify those either. Housing affordability, financial circumstances, childcare, parental leave, work-life balance, education, career considerations, changing family preferences, and economic uncertainty can all influence decisions about whether and when people have children. Statistics Canada has also identified a gap between how many children some Canadians say they would like to have and how many they ultimately expect to have. In its examination of fertility intentions, Statistics Canada found that socioeconomic circumstances can play an important role in whether Canadians believe their desired family size is realistically achievable (3).
None of this means national fertility statistics tell us exactly how many children live on a particular street or in a particular neighbourhood. They don’t, and claiming otherwise would be making precisely the kind of causal leap we are criticizing. However, changing fertility patterns are one demographic factor that can influence the number and concentration of children living in communities over time. Some neighbourhoods that were once filled with young families have aged along with the people who purchased homes there decades ago, while newer developments attracting younger families may have children everywhere. This is why looking at a quieter street and immediately declaring that “smartphones did this”, is such a weak causal argument. There are simply too many other variables that need to be considered.
It’s equally important that we don’t swing the pendulum too far in the opposite direction and pretend that nothing has changed. There is evidence that children’s outdoor free play, active transportation, and independent mobility are areas of legitimate concern. A 2024 Canadian study examining children in Montreal and Kingston found generally low engagement in free play, independent mobility, and active travel, while also finding meaningful differences associated with socioeconomic circumstances and between the two cities. The researchers specifically approached these behaviours through a broader social and environmental framework rather than attributing them to one single cause (4).
Technology can absolutely be part of that picture, and pretending otherwise would undermine the very evidence based approach we advocate. Screens compete for young people’s finite amount of time just as television, organized activities, homework, transportation, and other activities do. Canadian research examining barriers to community based outdoor play found that children who reported being “too busy” with screen based activities were less likely to spend time playing outdoors. That deserves our attention. However, the exact same study also identified several other important factors associated with outdoor play, including whether other children were nearby to play with, involvement in organized physical activities, parental perceptions of neighbourhood social cohesion, children’s fears associated with outdoor play, and whether children were permitted to play beyond their home without adult supervision (5).
This is where nuance becomes so important. If we selectively pull the finding about screen based activities from that research, we could easily create a headline claiming that screens are keeping kids indoors. However, if we read the entire study, we discover a much more complicated social ecosystem surrounding outdoor play. Technology may be one factor, but so are parents, neighbourhoods, available playmates, perceptions of safety, independence, community cohesion, and the physical environment. That’s exactly why reducing changes in childhood to “the smartphone” might make for a compelling social media post but doesn’t accurately reflect the complexity found in the research.
There’s another issue that Ai generated nostalgic images rarely capture, and we believe it deserves much more attention in this conversation. A child can live on your street and still not be visible outside because they may not have the same freedom to roam independently that many adults remember having as children. Many of us remember being allowed to walk to school alone, bicycle several blocks away, disappear into a neighbourhood park, visit friends without arranging a formal “playdate,” or leave home after breakfast and return later in the day. For many children today, particularly younger children, that level of independence isn’t necessarily the norm.
Canadian research examining children’s independent mobility has found that the issue is influenced by numerous individual, social, parental, and environmental factors. Parent’s perceptions of traffic danger, crime, dangerous crossings, neighbourhood safety, urbanization, and walkability have all been associated with children’s independent mobility. Interestingly, researchers have also found that mobile phone ownership was positively associated with independent mobility for both boys and girls in one Canadian multi site study. The researchers suggested that a phone may give parents a greater sense of security because they can communicate with or potentially monitor their child while the child is away from home (6).
A later national Canadian study similarly found that children who had a mobile phone demonstrated greater independent mobility, with phone ownership producing the second largest effect size in the researcher’s multivariable model. The authors suggested that phones may reduce parental safety concerns while also acknowledging the interesting tension created when a device simultaneously gives a child greater physical independence while allowing greater parental monitoring (7).
Think about what that means in the context of one of these nostalgic memes. The smartphone being portrayed as the device that supposedly keeps a child trapped indoors may, under some circumstances, actually be the device that gives a parent enough confidence to allow their child to leave the house independently. Again, context matters.
This raises a much more interesting question than the one typically presented by nostalgic social media AI imagery. When someone posts a photograph of children riding bicycles through a neighbourhood in 1985 beside an image of children using smartphones today, perhaps we should ask, “Were children outside more because they didn’t have smartphones, or because adults gave them greater freedom to be outside without supervision?” Maybe technology plays a role, maybe changing parenting norms play a role, or maybe neighbourhood design, traffic, safety concerns, demographics, organized activities, and available playmates play a role as well. Most likely, several of these variables interact with one another. That’s what makes causal questions difficult.
There is also evidence that heavier screen use can sometimes displace experiences outside, and this deserves to be acknowledged rather than explained away. A Canadian mixed methods study involving adolescents found that increased use of electronic screen technology was associated with a lower perceived importance of connecting with nature. The qualitative portion of the research also identified technology use and choosing indoor activities as barriers to connecting with nature (8).
This is exactly the kind of research we believe should inform conversations about young people and technology. If technology is displacing sleep, physical activity, face to face relationships, outdoor experiences, homework, family interaction, or other developmentally important activities, then parents and caregivers should absolutely pay attention. However, recognizing displacement is very different from claiming that technology alone caused the broader transformation of childhood. The evidence gives us reason to pay attention to technology use, but it also gives us reason to pay attention to the larger environment surrounding children.
Our position isn’t that technology has had no effect on childhood, because clearly it can. Our position is that one contributing factor, “it’s the smartphone”, shouldn’t automatically be elevated into the explanation for almost every change we see in childhood.
This summer, we consciously paid attention while travelling through different neighbourhoods, communities, beaches, parks, and other public spaces. We repeatedly saw children and teenagers riding bikes, swimming, playing sports, practising tricks on scooters and BMX bikes, talking, laughing, and simply hanging out together. We certainly saw phones too, but we also repeatedly saw something these nostalgic memes sometimes imply has disappeared, kids being kids together.
We want to be equally careful with our own observations. What we saw this summer doesn’t prove that children everywhere are spending just as much time outside as previous generations did. We weren’t conducting a study, collecting systematic observations, controlling for location or time, or measuring device use. Our experiences are anecdotes, just like someone else’s observation that their neighbourhood seems quieter today. The point is simply that anecdotal observation should be the beginning of a question rather than the end of one. If we go looking for teenagers staring at smartphones, we’ll find them. If we go looking for teenagers laughing with friends at a beach, playing basketball, skateboarding, riding bicycles, or talking face to face, we’ll find them too.
That’s an important digital literacy lesson in itself. Human beings are remarkably good at noticing evidence that confirms what we already believe while overlooking evidence that complicates the story. Social media can magnify that tendency by continually presenting us with content designed to validate our existing concerns, identities, and worldview. When a nostalgic image appears in our feed and immediately “feels true,” that emotional recognition should perhaps be the moment when we become more curious, not less.
There’s another important point about the AI generated images increasingly appearing in social media feeds. The fact that they’re AI generated isn’t actually the central problem. A human photographer, illustrator, advertising agency, political campaign, advocacy organization, or graphic designer could create exactly the same misleading comparison. What generative AI changes is the speed, scale, accessibility, and cost at which emotionally persuasive content like this can now be created and distributed.
Someone can generate dozens of nostalgic images depicting children happily riding bicycles through an idealized 1970s or 1980s neighbourhood, contrast those images with gloomy pictures of today’s children staring into glowing smartphones, add an emotionally provocative caption, and distribute them across multiple platforms extremely quickly. The visual comparison itself quietly supplies the argument. The first image represents freedom, friendship, community, happiness, and an allegedly healthier childhood. The second represents isolation, technology, inactivity, and loss. Before we’ve read a single piece of supporting evidence, we’ve already been nudged toward the conclusion the creator wants us to reach. That’s persuasion, that’s not evidence.
This is why the digital literacy question shouldn’t stop at, “Was this image created with AI?” Whether something was generated by AI is increasingly going to be only one small part of evaluating online content. The more important questions are, What is this image trying to make me believe? What emotion is it trying to trigger? What evidence supports the implied claim? Is correlation being presented as causation? What alternative explanations could exist? Is the image representative of reality, or was it created specifically to illustrate a narrative? What relevant information or context has conveniently been left out?
Those questions matter whether the person creating the content used a camera, Photoshop, Canva, Midjourney, ChatGPT, another generative AI tool, or a pencil and a piece of paper.
This is where we believe much of the current conversation about childhood and technology can go off track. The fact that childhood looks different today is observable. Why it looks different is an empirical question. Those are two very different things, however social media and cellphones frequently collapses them into one.
Technology has unquestionably changed childhood. Smartphones changed how young people communicate. Social media changed how friendships and social identities can be expressed. Gaming changed entertainment and socialization. Streaming changed media consumption. The internet changed access to information. Generative AI is now changing how young people create, learn, search, communicate, and interact with information. All of these technologies have created benefits, challenges, risks, opportunities, and trade offs that deserve serious evidence based examination. We shouldn’t minimize those changes simply because some arguments about technology are exaggerated.
However, neither should we transform technology into a convenient explanation for every social change involving children. Childhood exists inside a much larger ecosystem involving families, economics, housing, education, transportation, community design, parenting practices, demographics, culture, technology, public policy, and children’s own preferences and behaviours. Trying to reduce all of that complexity to “then smartphones arrived” might make for an emotionally powerful social media meme, but it doesn’t make for particularly good causal reasoning.
Perhaps that’s the most useful way to think about these images. Nostalgia can actually tell us something important. It can tell us what we valued about our own childhood and what we believe children may benefit from having more of today. Maybe we miss independence. Maybe we miss unsupervised play. Maybe we miss neighbourhood friendships. Maybe we miss riding bikes everywhere. Maybe we miss spending hours outside without adults organizing every minute of the day. Maybe we believe children benefit from having places where they can gather, experiment, make mistakes, negotiate disagreements, become bored, invent games, and solve problems without an adult immediately stepping in.
Those are conversations worth having, and nostalgic memories may actually provide a useful starting point for them. Rather than simply blaming smartphones, however, perhaps nostalgia should encourage us to ask a much more productive question, “What conditions allowed those childhood experiences to happen, and can we create more of those conditions for children today?”
Maybe that means giving children greater age appropriate independence. Maybe it means designing more walkable communities and protecting parks and public spaces where children can gather. Maybe it means protecting time for unstructured play rather than scheduling every waking hour. Maybe it means helping parents develop greater confidence in allowing children age appropriate independence. Maybe it means ensuring young people have other kids nearby with whom they can actually play. Maybe it also means establishing reasonable boundaries around technology so screens don’t consistently displace sleep, physical activity, outdoor experiences, face to face relationships, and other things we know matter. Those are considerably more useful conversations than pretending we can recreate 1985 simply by taking away a smartphone.
Childhood has changed, and technology is unquestionably part of that change. Pretending otherwise wouldn’t be supported by the evidence. However, technology hasn’t changed in isolation. Our communities have changed, demographics have changed, families and parenting practices have changed, economic realities have changed, neighbourhoods have changed, and the expectations, opportunities, and culture surrounding childhood have changed as well. Perhaps most importantly, we have changed too.
So, before blaming technology simply because childhood today doesn’t look exactly like the childhood we remember, perhaps we should ask ourselves whether we’re actually looking at childhood as young people experience it today, or searching for the childhood we remember having.
A picture can certainly show us that something looks different. What it can’t do, by itself, is tell us why.
