The $80 Smart Glasses Problem: When Discreet Recording Technology Becomes Affordable to Almost Anyone

We have written several articles about the privacy, safety, and consent concerns surrounding smart glasses (1)(2)(3)(4). Much of the public discussion has understandably focused on Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which have helped move wearable cameras and artificial intelligence from something that once felt futuristic into an increasingly ordinary consumer product.


However, there is another part of this conversation that we believe parents and caregivers should be paying attention to. Meta’s glasses start at roughly $409 Canadian, depending on the model and configuration (5). That price creates a certain amount of financial friction, particularly for youth and teens. A teenager may want a pair, but spending several hundred dollars on glasses is very different from making an impulse purchase for less than $100. However, that price barrier is rapidly disappearing as cheaper smart glasses come to market.


We Bought a Pair to See What $80 Actually Gets You


Given the popularity of Meta’s smart glasses, we have seen a growing number of much cheaper China knock off alternatives appearing online and being promoted through platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Some look remarkably similar to ordinary sunglasses or prescription style frames, yet incorporate cameras, microphones, speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, and various artificial intelligence features.


Rather than simply relying on advertisements or online reviews, we decided to purchase a pair ourselves. We picked up a pair of “M02 Smart AI Glasses”, which can be purchased for under $80 Canadian depending on the seller. At that price, we were not expecting much, but we were wrong. Recently, a similar type of cheap smart glasses sold off the shelves in Australia (6)





According to the product documentation and advertising, the M02 glasses include an integrated 8-megapixel Sony IMX219 camera that allows the wearer to take point of view photographs with the press of a button. They can also record first person video. Documentation we reviewed specifies 1080p video at 30 frames per second, although some sellers advertise slightly different specifications, suggesting there may be variations of the M02 being sold.


The glasses we purchased also contain dual microphones capable of audio recording and open ear speakers for listening to music, smartphone audio, and telephone calls. Through Bluetooth, the wearer can answer, reject, and end calls directly from the glasses.


The M02 also incorporates a voice activated artificial intelligence assistant accessed through the companion HeyCyan app. A wearer can say “Hey Cyan” or use a physical control to activate the assistant and ask questions. The glasses also advertise visual recognition capabilities, where the camera can capture what the wearer is looking at and AI can then attempt to identify or provide information about the object or scene, in our testing it worked ok, but not spectacularly.


Translation is another advertised feature, with some documentation claiming support for more than 100 languages, including conversation and simultaneous translation modes. It should be noted that we were unable to test this feature. Media captured by the glasses can be transferred wirelessly to a smartphone over Wi-Fi and managed through the HeyCyan application (7).


Our particular glasses also came with polarized photochromic lenses that darkened when we went outside, making them look and function even more like an ordinary pair of sunglasses.



What Surprised Us Was That They Actually Worked


When testing inexpensive technology purchased online, there is often a significant difference between what appears on the box and what the device actually does. In this case, most of the advertised functions we tested worked.


The audio through the speakers was somewhat tinny but clear, and the AI assistant was not as quick or as capable as the AI experiences available through more expensive products. However, it was functional and successfully responded to many of the questions we asked through voice prompts.


One significant privacy issue did concern us. When we attempted to determine precisely which underlying AI model or platform was processing the AI requests made through the glasses and the HeyCyan application, we could not find clear disclosure identifying it. For a device capable of capturing audio, images, and information about the wearer’s surroundings, transparency about where information is being processed, retained, or potentially shared matters. Parents and caregivers should not assume that an inexpensive AI-enabled device has the same privacy architecture, security practices, or transparency they might expect from a larger and more scrutinized manufacturer. However, the AI capabilities were not the primary reason we purchased these glasses, we wanted to test the camera.


The Camera Was Better Than We Expected


Our biggest surprise was the quality of the photographs and video these glasses could produce. Given the price of the glasses, we expected mediocre images and relatively poor video. Instead, we found both to be surprisingly good for a device costing less than $80. The audio captured while recording video was also clearer than we expected.

That matters, because the privacy risk associated with smart glasses isn’t determined by whether they have the most sophisticated AI assistant. Sometimes the most consequential features are much simpler such as a camera, a microphone, a wearable form factor, and the ability for the user to covertly record what they are looking at without holding up a phone.


When someone pulls out a smartphone and points it toward another person, there is usually a visible social cue that recording may be taking place. Smart glasses fundamentally change that cue. A person can be looking directly at you while simultaneously capturing what they see. The technology makes the camera less visible because the camera has become part of something we have been socially conditioned not to think of as a recording device.


There Is a Recording Light, But It Is Useless In Our Opinion


The M02 does include a stated privacy feature. When a photograph is taken, a small white indicator light on the left upper portion of the frame flashes. When video is being recorded, the "advisory" ight remains illuminated. Presumably, the purpose is to provide people nearby with a visual indication that the camera is operating.


In principle, this is a good idea. In practice, our testing identified an important and significant weakness. The indicator is sufficiently small and exposed which we were able to obscure in several ways. We won’t provide instructions on how to do that, but it did not require sophisticated technical knowledge.


This distinction becomes important when comparing inexpensive smart glasses with Meta’s approach. Meta has designed its current glasses so that interference with the capture LED can trigger warnings and prevent recording until the obstruction is removed. No consumer safety mechanism should be considered impossible to defeat, but building tamper detection into the device creates additional friction. With inexpensive alternatives, that friction may not exist and this is where we believe the conversation about smart glasses needs to broaden beyond Meta.


The Bigger Safety and Privacy Issue May Be the $80 Pair Of Glasses, Not the $400 Pair


A great deal of attention has understandably been directed toward Meta because it is a major technology company with a recognizable product, and rightly so given its past track record. However, concentrating exclusively on Meta risks missing a much larger development occurring underneath the premium smart glasses market, the technology is being commoditized.


Cameras, microphones, Bluetooth chips, small batteries, speakers, and basic AI connectivity have become inexpensive enough that manufacturers can package many of these capabilities into glasses costing a fraction of the price of premium products.


A relative cheaper pairs of smart glasses, often made in China, occupies a completely different consumer category from a $400 plus pair. They can become a birthday present or even be purchased with money earned at a part time job. Older teens and young adults may be able to buy them without involving a parent or caregiver at all, and they can be ordered online with relatively little thought.


As the price falls, access increases. As access increases, the number of wearable cameras in schools, parties, workplaces, change rooms, bedrooms, homes, vehicles, recreation centres, and other social environments could increase as well. The privacy question therefore changes from, “What happens when some people own smart glasses?” to, “What happens when almost anyone can?”


When Recording Becomes Almost Invisible


This doesn’t mean that everyone who purchases inexpensive smart glasses intends to misuse them. Most people can use them for perfectly legitimate reasons, including taking photographs, recording activities, listening to music, making calls, translation, accessibility, or simply experimenting with new technology.


The concern is not the existence of legitimate uses, the concern is what happens when a technology with legitimate uses also significantly reduces the friction involved in harmful ones.


Consider a teenager at a party. Someone wearing what appears to be a normal pair of glasses can potentially record conversations and interactions without the same obvious physical behaviour associated with holding a phone.


Now consider more private environments such as bedrooms, bathrooms, change rooms, locker rooms, and intimate encounters. The ability to discreetly capture images or video raises obvious concerns surrounding consent, privacy, sexualized images, voyeurism, bullying, humiliation, coercion, and the distribution of intimate images.


Once an image or video has been captured, the glasses themselves are only the beginning of the digital chain. That content can potentially be transferred to a phone, uploaded to social media, shared through group chats, sent through disappearing-message services, manipulated with artificial intelligence, or redistributed far beyond the audience originally involved. A recording that took seconds to capture can have consequences lasting years.


We Are Already Seeing Who These Products Are Being Marketed To


Another observation caught our attention while researching these lower cost glasses. When we looked through social media posts, promotional videos, and discussions surrounding inexpensive camera glasses, we noticed that a significant amount of the visible interest appeared to be coming from teenage boys and young men. We would be cautious about turning that observation into a statistical claim without reliable demographic sales data. However, it is enough to make us pay attention.


This becomes particularly relevant when combined with what we already know about adolescent risk taking, social status, peer approval, sexual curiosity, online challenges, and the speed with which digital content can move through peer groups. A young person doesn’t need to begin with malicious intent for something to go badly wrong.


  • “Watch this.”


  • “This will be funny.”


  • “Don’t tell her I’m recording.”


  • “Send me that video.”


Those few seconds of poor judgment can create consequences that neither the person recording nor the person being recorded anticipated.


Parents Shouldn’t Try to Become Smart Glasses Detectives


We don’t believe the answer is for parents and caregivers to memorize every brand of smart glasses entering the marketplace, that would be almost impossible.


The M02 glasses is but one example of a much larger trend. Models will change, manufacturers will change, prices will continue to fall, cameras will improve, batteries will last longer, and AI capabilities will become more sophisticated.


Instead of chasing individual products, we believe parents should concentrate on the capabilities. If your child asks for smart glasses, or you discover that they already own a pair, learn what those particular glasses can do. Can they photograph? Can they record video? Can they record audio? Is there a visible recording indicator? Where are recordings stored? Do they automatically upload anywhere? What app is required? What permissions does that app request? Is there an AI assistant? Where is AI processing taking place? What does the privacy policy say about captured data?


Most importantly, talk about consent. Owning a camera does not automatically give someone the ethical right to record everything that camera can see.


Consent Needs to Become Part of Today’s Onlife Literacy


For years, we have taught young people to think before they post. Smart glasses require us to move that conversation one step earlier and teach young people to think before they capture.


Before taking a photograph or recording a video either on smart glasses or a phone, a young person should be thinking about whether the other person knows they are being recorded, whether they would reasonably expect privacy in that location, what could happen to the recording afterwards, and whether capturing that moment could embarrass, exploit, or harm, the other person.


We should also teach youth and teens that the absence of someone saying “no” does not necessarily mean that meaningful consent exists, particularly when the person doesn’t even know a camera is operating.


This becomes even more important when recording intersects with nudity, sexual activity, intimate images, or other highly private situations, where serious legal consequences may also become involved depending upon the circumstances and ages of those involved.


This Is Bigger Than One Pair of Glasses


Our reason for purchasing and testing the M02 smart glasses wasn’t to declare one inexpensive product inherently dangerous, it was to understand where wearable technology is heading. What we discovered is that capabilities once associated with expensive smart glasses are already moving rapidly into much cheaper consumer devices. That is the development we believe deserves more attention.


The privacy challenge isn’t simply that Meta sells glasses containing cameras, microphones, speakers, and artificial intelligence. The bigger shift is that these capabilities are becoming cheap enough to disappear into ordinary consumer products that almost anyone can purchase. Today it is an $80 pair of smart glasses, tomorrow it may be even less.


As cameras and AI increasingly migrate from the devices we hold in our hands to the things we wear on our bodies, our social understanding of when we are being photographed, recorded, analyzed, or digitally captured will have to evolve as well. For parents and caregivers, this isn’t a reason to panic about smart glasses or automatically prohibit them, it’s a reason to start talking about them.


Ask your child what they think appropriate recording looks like. Ask how they would feel if someone secretly recorded them. Talk about why consent still matters even when technology makes recording easy. Discuss what they should do if they discover someone has captured or shared an intimate or humiliating recording of them or someone else.


Most importantly, don’t assume that because your child doesn’t own a pair of smart glasses that this technology doesn’t affect them. Someone sitting beside them in class, attending the same party, riding in the same vehicle, standing in the same change room, or spending time in the same social circle eventually might.


The smart glasses conversation is no longer just about a $400 pair of Meta Ray-Bans. It’s about what happens when the camera on someone’s face costs significantly less than the phone in their pocket.
